No. Make a note. There are things that do not support the cultivation of ecstasy. They include reading all friend Facebook statuses indiscriminately because this leads to being exposed to a) the worst of the ‘news’ of the day, and b) too much of the nothing with which we continually stuff ourselves.
I don’t have words for the resultant sensation, but the more I feel it the worse I am at tolerating it.

of course, one would never spout off about how being alone with yourself is a noble, evolved thing so they could feel better about habitually avoiding the utterly existential hell of les autres ((And in that little essay is a rich starting point for another essay on the oft-underestimated effect of emotional abuse on children, but I don’t have the time or energy for that today…)) since people have so often been hurtful—intentionally or not—that it is more comforting to be in solitude than engage in attempts at human connection which inevitably end in tears. cough. cough.
This video and the positive response to it give me an idea. If solitude is a skill that can be learned and people need to be encouraged to develop it, perhaps there is a niche for the Solitude Coach to provide intermediate steps and support. Like, the coach would arrange to show up at the same restaurant as you and pretend she doesn’t know you so that you know you will not be the only person there eating alone… get used to appearing to be alone before you actually go it alone. And so on.
Someone more entrepreneurial than me can do something with that one. Perhaps Death Bear needs a sidekick…

Can I just say that, after 8 years of our highest leaders denying that they have to tell anyone what they are doing, answer to anyone, or release any of their documents, I am adoring this shift to transparency in government.
The new Congressional Oversight Panel for Economic Stabilization now has a website (cop.senate.gov) and is issuing (or at least planning to issue) reports every 30 days. Here is the intro video from panel chair Elizabeth Warren, who is actually pleasant to listen to:*
If you were willing to dig around on Thomas.gov and various agency websites, trawling through legalese and govermentese, you could usually find most documents. But this move toward making it easy for the everyday American (or at least those with, uh, Internet access…) to keep up with what leaders are doing, and explaining what is going on (in lay but not dumbed-down terms)… This is refreshing. This is smart. This is good.

* In fact, listening to her gives me teaching withdrawal symptoms. That’s ok. I’ll be back in front of a classroom soon enough. Teaching a very different class, about which I am getting excited.
